Genesis 15:5-8; 15:18

(Common English Bible)

Abram and Sarai have desired children, but none has been delivered. Abram is about to appoint an heir, and God interrupts.

Then {God} brought Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars if you think you can count them. … This is how many children you will have.” Abram trusted the Lord, and the Lord recognized Abram’s high moral character.

{God} said to Abram, “I am the Lord, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as your possession.” But Abram said, “Lord God, how do I know that I will actually possess it?” 18 That day the Lord cut a covenant with Abram: “To your descendants I give this land, from Egypt’s river to the great Euphrates.”

 Luke 13:31-35

(bower translation)

Just then some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, “Get out. Walk away from here. Herod wants to kill you.” Jesus said to them, “You walk away. Go tell that fox for me, ‘Listen up!  Today and tomorrow I am casting out demons and healing. On the third day I will finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is not fitting for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’

Jerusalem,

Jerusalem,

the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!

How often have I wanted to gather your children together

in the way a hen gathers her chicklings under her wings.

But you were not willing!

Look: your house is left to you.

I am talking to you!

You will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'”
